For Sujata and Taniya, it was not just about selling saris; it was about weaving stories, connecting hearts, and spreading love—one thread at a time.
Their story unfolded against a shared passion for saris and a profound reverence for India's textile heritage. With no entrepreneurial experience but a reservoir of determination, they embarked on a quest to unearth the stories woven within each sari.
"We decided to take a deep dive. We initially went to the villages of Bengal and Orissa and then eventually everywhere to source our saris. All we had was an almirah at home to stack up the saris, and then we rented a run-down warehouse in a dingy lane at Kalina," they reminisced.
Thus began the journey of Suta, where they poured their hearts and souls into spreading love through sarees and apparel. It all began with a conversation with weavers in West Bengal, where they witnessed the magical process of saree-making.
From humble beginnings with just two weavers to selling two lakh orders in a year, Sujata and Taniya Biswas' sari label became a beacon of youthfulness and timelessness. Their vision was simple yet revolutionary – to make the sari cooler and appealing to a younger audience.
Their creations, devoid of traditional borders and pallus, exuded a contemporary charm—solid colours, colour-blocked designs, and modern digital prints. With their faces adorning the brand, they modeled saris in everyday settings, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity.
But behind the glamour lay a profound connection to their roots. Growing up in West Bengal and Odisha, saris were not just garments but an embodiment of resilience and grace. They sought to translate this ease to a wider audience, offering saris that draped effortlessly and felt like a second skin.
Their storytelling prowess further endeared them to their customers. Each sari bore a whimsical name and a tale, drawing buyers into a world of enchantment. As the faces of the brand, Sujata and Taniya's quirky style and relatable charm garnered them a legion of fans.
Despite their expansion into other realms like loungewear, menswear, and home décor, the sari remained their first love. It was a testament to their unwavering dedication to preserving tradition in a rapidly changing world.

Simran Khara stood as a beacon of change in a world where clean homes often came at the cost of toxic exposure. Her journey from corporate executive to eco-entrepreneur extraordinaire was a testament to the power of innovation and parental concern.
Picture this: It's March 22, 2020, and India finds itself thrust into the throes of its first pandemic-induced lockdown. Families huddle within the confines of their homes, navigating a new reality where cooking and cleaning become collective endeavours. Even the youngest members, like Simran's then five-year-old daughter, eagerly pitch in.
As the days passed, Simran couldn't shake off her growing unease. The labels of her household cleaners revealed a dark truth: harmful chemicals lurked within, posing a threat not just to her family but to the very surfaces they sought to cleanse. Determined to safeguard her loved ones, Simran embarked on a mission fueled by maternal instinct and her years of corporate wisdom.
Months of meticulous research culminated in the birth of "Koparo Clean" in February 2021. With its promise of toxin-free formulas crafted from nature's bounty, Koparo Clean emerged as a beacon of hope in a sea of chemical-laden alternatives.
Simran's resolve was unwavering. Teaming up with a cutting-edge R&D lab in Bengaluru, she set her sights on formulating products free from seven notorious chemicals. It wasn't just about being natural; it was about efficacy. Surfactants derived from coconut and sugarcane emerged as the unsung heroes, giving rise to the brand's name — 'Koparo.'
But Simran's journey wasn't without its share of hurdles. Armed with a vision and a bootstrap investment of Rs 55 lakh, she braved the uncertainty, knowing that significant risks often heralded greater rewards. Failure became but a stepping stone, mentors offering guidance amidst the swirling currents of entrepreneurship.

From Corporate to Cultivator: Gitanjali Rajamani's Journey with Farmizen
Venturing back to her roots amidst the lush landscapes of Kerala, Gitanjali Rajamani bid farewell to her seven-year stint in the corporate world to embark on a revolutionary path.
Gitanjali's vision for Farmizen was twofold:
1. to deliver fresh, chemical-free bounty to city dwellers
2. while uplifting farmers' livelihoods.
Currently flourishing in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Surat, Farmizen boasts 3,000 subscribers, tending to 24 verdant plots encompassing approximately 40 acres of cultivated land. But Gitanjali's aspirations stretch far beyond these horizons; she envisions expanding Farmizen's reach to 100,000 families, generating a staggering Rs 300 crore in annual revenue within the next two years.
The genesis of Farmizen was rooted in a profound realization: the very vegetables we consume often contain harmful pesticides. Thus sprouted the idea of Farmizen, nurtured by Gitanjali's proximity to a local farmer and her resolve to cultivate pesticide-free produce. With the support of her allies, Shamik Chakraborty and Sudhakaran Balasubramanian, both hailing from IT backgrounds, she set out to turn this vision into reality.
Together, they crafted a bespoke app, heralding Farmizen's inception in June 2017. What began as a modest endeavour swiftly burgeoned, now spanning 47 acres across Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Surat. In September 2017, Farmizen secured substantial funding of Rs 34.50 lakhs, with esteemed angel investors such as Neeraj Arora, a luminary from the core team of WhatsApp, joining the cause.
The fruits of Farmizen's labour have been manifold. Customers revel in the convenience of receiving 100% organic produce at their doorsteps, while farmers rejoice in newfound prosperity, their incomes soaring threefold. In 2019, Farmizen's ambit expanded to include the delivery of organic fruits, captivating over 16,000 patrons.
In October 2018, Gitanjali's indomitable spirit garnered global acclaim, as Goldman Sachs and Fortune bestowed upon her the title of Global Woman Leader. Her journey is a testament to the power of determination and dedication, underscoring that no feat is too monumental or daunting when fueled by unwavering resolve.

Meet Ahana Gautam, born out of love and admiration for her single mother. Open Secret is more than just a brand—it's a love letter, a reminder that nothing is impossible when you have the unwavering support of a mother.
Despite the odds, her mother always encouraged her to pursue her dreams, instilling in her the values of perseverance and courage.
In March 2021, Ahana tragically lost her mother amidst the pandemic. Yet, from the depths of grief, she found strength in her mother's legacy, returning to work the very next day, inspired to honour her mother's memory by continuing to pursue her dreams.
Armed with a degree from IIT Bombay and an MBA from Harvard, Ahana could have pursued a conventional career path. But when she saw a Whole Foods store in the US, she wondered why India didn't have such stores. Then she came to India and started her unjunk food journey.

BharatAgri platform's algorithm tells farmers what to grow, when and how to grow and water it, to maximise production and farmer income.
Sai Gole and Siddharth Dialani were part of IIT-Madras's Centre for Innovation—a lab where students created products in their free time—but they didn't want to build something "sophisticated that was meant for competition or labs". Gole says, "It had to be something which can work for people or [solve] some real-life problem."
Her family had been into agriculture for 30 years, and she was aware of the specific problems related to the field. The duo decided to solve those through their technological know-how.
After working for almost a year post graduation, the two stayed on a five-acre farm in Pune to get a feel of the impediments faced by farmers. Says Dialani of their experience, "We realised Indian farmers earn really less because of the unavailability of scientific knowledge. They needed a personalised solution."
Gole and Dialani launched LeanAgri (later renamed BharatAgri) in Pune in 2017 to provide a "systematic solution and consultancy calendar" to the farmers. Based on their data, BharatAgri's algorithm offers critical inputs like what the farmers should grow, how they should grow it, when to water, and when to provide fertiliser, helping them increase production.
BharatAgri won the UberPITCH competition in March 2017 after which Uber invested $50,000 (₹35 lakh) in the startup. It has now raised ₹4.5 crore from investors.
BharatAgri launched its mobile application in five languages; it has over 1 lakh users apart from 25,000 paid farmers and claims to be the only company in India that has been able to monetise an information-based service in agriculture.

Imagine your life's work being recognized on a national platform overnight! That's the whirlwind journey of Bijiyashanti Tongbram, the visionary behind Sanajing Sana Thambal, a game-changer in eco-friendly fashion.
It all began with a momentous shout-out from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the landmark 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat in April 2023. Bijiyashanti, hailing from Manipur, earned accolades for her pioneering efforts in empowering rural women through her innovative venture.
Armed with a botany degree and a heart full of passion, Bijiyashanti embarked on an extraordinary mission: extracting and crafting fibres from lotus stems into exquisite accessories. From scarves to neckties, each piece is a testament to her creativity and dedication to sustainability.
Despite initial setbacks, Bijiyashanti's perseverance paid off when Mann Ki Baat catapulted her into the spotlight. "In less than 24 hours, my stock was wiped clean, and orders poured in," she recalls, reflecting on the life-changing impact of the Prime Minister's recognition.
Born and raised near the picturesque Loktak Lake, Bijiyashanti's connection to nature runs deep. Her fascination with lotus flowers sparked a revolutionary idea: why not utilize every part of this sacred plant? She unlocked the secrets of lotus stem fibres through relentless research and experimentation, transforming waste into wearable art.
But Bijiyashanti's journey isn't just about innovation and empowerment. In 2019, she founded Sanajing Sana Thambal, a collective empowering local women to become skilled artisans. Through her guidance, they extract fibres and weave them into stunning creations, earning a livelihood while preserving their heritage.
Today, with 30 women and dedicated weavers on board, Sanajing Sana Thambal is a beacon of hope and sustainability. Their products, infused with the essence of Loktak Lake, are not just accessories but a symbol of empowerment and environmental consciousness.

In 2016, the world of silver jewelry was yet to embrace the limelight. Jewelry, often regarded as a mere embellishment, lacked the innovation it deserved. What struck many was the paradox: an industry designed for women was predominantly controlled by men, from its creation to its ownership. It was time for change.
Driven by artistic passion, Divya sought to craft pieces that sparked intrigue and conversation. Their vision? To empower women as rightful owners of an industry meant to serve them. With a meager Rs 40,000 and boundless dreams, they unveiled their inaugural collection at one of Bangalore’s vibrant flea markets, birthing Quirksmith.
What began as a sisterly endeavor has since burgeoned into a celebrated brand known for its distinctive designs. With a team comprised of over 60% women, they've not only created stunning jewelry but also fostered employment for artisans across India, impacting countless lives along the way.
Meet Divya, a NIFT '04 graduate, whose illustrious career has been dedicated to perfecting the art of crafting standout designs. From her early days at Amrapali Jaipur to her tenure at FabJewels Ltd, Divya’s passion for creativity knows no bounds. Now, as the head of design and production at Quirksmith, she continues to push boundaries.
Then there's Pragya, an IIT Delhi and INSEAD alumna, whose strategic prowess has been honed through years of consulting with top-tier firms. Venturing into Quirksmith alongside her sister, she brings her expertise to the realm of marketing and sales, driving the brand's growth with finesse.
Their mantra, “अपने जज़्बात पहनिये” – “Wear your emotions,” encapsulates their mission. Each piece is crafted to be a vessel of self-expression, reflecting the wearer’s essence. Whether it’s the wanderlust of the “Musaafir” anklet or the self-love embodied in the “Atma Mugdha” Earcuff, Quirksmith designs are imbued with the essence of individuality.
For Divya, her creations are an extension of her ever-evolving identity—a testament to the myriad facets of the human experience. She hopes that, like her, others will find resonance and reflection in the pieces she brings to life.
At Quirksmith, it's not just about jewelry; it's about storytelling. Join them on their journey as they continue to redefine self-expression, one exquisite piece at a time.

Empowering Female Entrepreneurs in Construction: Demi Knight Clark's Inspiring Journey
Demi Knight Clark, a trailblazing MBA graduate from The Yale School of Management, is revolutionizing the construction industry with not one, but two groundbreaking ventures: She Built This City (2019) and Spark Building Group (2022). Her mission? To shatter barriers and amplify female presence in traditionally male-dominated fields.
Clark's drive stems from a deeply personal place. Raised in a household where gender equality was not just spoken of but lived, her grandmother's legacy as one of the iconic "Rosies" during WWII fueled her passion for challenging gender norms. "I didn’t experience gender disparity until guidance counselor interventions for college, then my first jobs in the field," she reflects. Inspired by the resilience of the women who blazed trails before her, Clark is determined to honor their legacy by forging ahead.
The road to gender parity in construction may seem daunting, but for Clark, it's a challenge worth embracing. Drawing from her experiences at Yale SOM, she emphasizes the importance of breaking free from conventional silos and fostering inclusive dialogue. "Yale SOM was the ultimate norm creator," she shares. "It created safe spaces for marginalized communities, opening pathways for the discussions we need to be having in much bigger company venues."
As a seasoned storyteller, Clark knows the power of narratives in driving change. By weaving impactful stories from her time at Yale, she's able to bridge the gap between companies and influencers, sparking meaningful conversations on diversity and inclusion.
To aspiring female entrepreneurs, Clark offers invaluable advice: "Stop auditioning. Just go. Fail forward." She recognizes the tendency for women to seek validation through certifications and degrees, but she urges them to break free from this cycle. "We can’t have progress if we don’t fail," she asserts. "And trust me, I’ve been that woman for decades who has to be cleaner, faster, stronger, better to succeed on the jobsite."
Demi Knight Clark's journey is a testament to the transformative power of resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in oneself. As she continues to challenge the status quo, she paves the way for a more inclusive and equitable future in the construction industry and beyond. Join her in building a brighter tomorrow, one story at a time.

Revolutionizing Maternal Care: The Maternia Story
Imagine a world where every pregnant woman, regardless of her socio-economic background, has access to quality maternal care. That's the vision driving Maternia, a groundbreaking startup founded by Clara Maspons, Zainab Dakik, and Natalia Villarreal.
Their journey began at Vlerick Business School in Belgium, where fate brought these three extraordinary women together. Despite their diverse origins - Spanish, Panamanian, and Tanzanian - they shared a passion for innovation and a drive to make a difference in women's healthcare.
At Vlerick, they honed their entrepreneurial skills and conceived Maternia's mission: to develop a low-cost, low-tech medical device empowering pregnant women in underserved communities to monitor their fetus' well-being at home.
But Maternia is more than just a startup; it's a movement. Inspired by their experiences and driven by the glaring inequalities in women's health, Clara, Zainab, and Natalia embarked on a mission to tackle the global tragedy of stillbirths.
Their journey from classroom concept to impactful enterprise exemplifies the power of education and collaboration. Vlerick Business School provided the fertile ground where their idea took root and flourished. Through the Start-up Accelerator program, they turned a vision into reality, propelled by their shared commitment to effecting change.
For Clara, who had previously worked with women political leaders, and Zainab, who witnessed firsthand the disparities in healthcare access, Maternia became a calling. Natalia's personal encounters with stillbirths further fueled their determination to make a difference.
What sets Maternia apart is not just their innovative device but also their diversity. Clara, Zainab, and Natalia recognize that true innovation thrives on different perspectives. Their multicultural backgrounds enriched their approach, ensuring that Maternia's solution is not just effective but inclusive.
As they continue their journey, Clara, Zainab, and Natalia stand as beacons of hope, proving that with determination and collaboration, we can revolutionize maternal care and create a better world for all women. Join them in their quest to redefine the future of healthcare. #Maternia #WomenInHealthcare#Innovation #Diversity #Impact #entrepreneurship
